Rethinking the system
Wind turbines and solar panels are visible consequences of the increasing demand for clean, sustainable energy among consumers. In the Netherlands and Germany, traditional energy sources such as nuclear energy and coal-fired power stations are being phased out and replaced by sustainable wind and solar energy. This transition, referred to as the energy transition (or Energiewende in Germany), means that grid operators such as TenneT must completely overhaul the existing electricity supply system.
